Design Technology

Design and Technology brings learning to life at St Mary’s. Through creativity and imagination children design and make products that solve real and relevant problems. They acquire a broad range of subject knowledge and draw on disciplines such as mathematics, science, computing and art. Through their evaluation of past and present design and technology, they develop a critical understanding of its impact on daily life and the wider world.

  • Develop the creative, technical and practical expertise needed to perform everyday tasks confidently and to participate successfully in an increasingly technological world.
  • Build and apply a repertoire of knowledge, understanding and skills in order to design and make high-quality prototypes and products for a wide range of users.
  • Critique, evaluate and test their ideas and products and the work of others.
  • Understand and apply the principles of nutrition and learn how to cook.

Teaching and Learning

Children are taught Design and Technology through a variety of exciting topics, based around the Cornerstones Curriculum. A variety of teaching strategies such as whole class, small group and partner work are used throughout the school to ensure that all children are integrated into classroom activities. We strive to provide opportunities for children to flourish with an Art Week dedicated to Art and DT. The children are encouraged to evaluate their own ideas and methods, as well as evaluate the work of others.
